Anxiety, stress, and fatigue have become normalized states of being in today’s fast-
paced world. In-person Reiki sessions have both anecdotal and scientific support for
calming the nervous system, and distance Reiki provides the same benefits without the
need for physical proximity. In this article, we’ll explore the research and techniques
behind distance Reiki and how it supports emotional well-being and nervous system
regulation.
What is Distance Reiki and How is it Channeled?
Distance Reiki works on the principle that Reiki life force healing energy exists beyond
space and time. A practitioner intentionally connects with your energy field using
focused intention, visualization, and distance Reiki symbols to direct healing energy.
Sometimes a surrogate, like a teddy bear or crystal, may be used as a focal point. The
energy reaches you regardless of time, location or activity. This method allows the
nervous system to relax, encouraging emotional release, inner balance, and a sense of
calm¹,².
Research on Distance Reiki and Anxiety
Oncology Patients in Turkey
A pilot study explored the effects of distance Reiki on pain, anxiety, and fatigue in
oncology patients. Participants received five nightly remote Reiki sessions alongside
standard care. Results showed significantly lower levels of pain, anxiety, and fatigue in
the Reiki group compared to controls. This suggests that energy healing can support
emotional and nervous system regulation even from afar¹.
Frontline Healthcare Workers During COVID-19
Another study examined a remote Reiki program for healthcare professionals.
Participants received four consecutive 20-minute Reiki sessions remotely. Pre- and
post-measures indicated significant reductions in stress, anxiety, and pain, along with
improvements in well-being and sleep quality². These findings suggest that distance
Reiki may provide meaningful support in high-stress situations.
How Distance Reiki May Reduce Anxiety
Distance Reiki gently engages the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body
feel safe and allowing energy to flow freely. Many recipients report experiencing:
Deep relaxation and emotional lightness
Physical sensations such as warmth, tingling, or reduced muscle tension
Mental clarity and quieter thoughts
A sense of grounding and being centred
Calming of the nervous system and reduced stress
Support for restorative sleep
Emotional release and a feeling of renewal
Reduced muscle tension and enhanced natural healing abilities
By facilitating the flow of energy, distance Reiki supports the nervous system and can
reduce anxiety over time¹,².
Practitioner Guidance and Experiencing Distance Reiki
Distance Reiki is channeled in much the same way as in-person sessions. You do not
need to do anything to receive it. Simply relax and allow the energy to flow. While a
quiet space may help you notice subtle sensations, Reiki works whether you feel it, fall
asleep, see visuals, gain clarity, find emotional release, or experience nothing at all.
This integrative approach is a beautiful complement to other therapeutic modalities for
holistic anxiety support.
